The Code Of A New Life Path

Kodluyoruz.

Empowering youth through coding. An aim for which Kodluyoruz was founded for. Since 2016, our determined efforts have focused on supporting high-potential youth in Turkey. We are striving toward transforming Turkey’s ecosystem into a hub for talented coders.

We conduct coding bootcamps that provide more than mere coding education. With expert trainers, soft skills training, and community support, our Bootcamp graduates gain the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in the tech world. One of our biggest differences is supporting our graduates in job placement through our extensive employer network. In this way, Kodluyoruz grads achieve their dreams, fulfilling their ambitions in tech.

In this journey, we support any aspiring developer who has the required ambition and determination to succeed. And a very special group that inspired us a lot this year has been the refugee youth in Turkey.

Refugees are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, children, with the same hopes and ambitions as us — except that a twist of fate has bound their lives to a global refugee crisis on an unprecedented scale.

— Khaled Hosseini

Life choices differ when we face struggles and challenges. We have met with hundreds of refugees and witnessed their life stories, unfortunately often mixed with many war memories. We are lucky to meet with these refugees who often have fewer options for a new start. On top of all their challenges, they look for ways to fit within the host community. Whether it’s the language barrier, lack of access to resources, or having the right introduction, they face many difficulties to level up in their new lives.

That’s why Kodluyoruz is working to include everyone, and it’s opening its doors to accept youth refugees from Syria and other nationalities into the Bootcamps. Becoming the connection point for them to meet, collaborate and have equal access to opportunities.

Currently, Kodluyoruz is facilitating five bootcamps where refugees are welcomed to learn coding, such as Java 101, PHP Laravel, Angular & Python Front-End web development, and React Native. Refugees and Turks write the code of a new life path together with absolute eagerness.

I am one of these refugees. As a Syrian living in Turkey under temporary protection, for many years, I have been facing my fears and challenges daily. Some of these include the language barrier, adapting to a new culture, seeking work and job opportunities. And above all of it, dealing with the legal terms of acquiring work permits over the years, and supporting a family by bringing food to the table…

All that wouldn’t have been possible without the limitless support and efforts provided by several organizations and partners who facilitated training to pave the way for me to develop my skills faster and to integrate better with the community norms.

It’s not a coincidence that now, I write this blog post and work with multiple organizations. It’s a pile of trial and error and self-determination. All supported by never-ending knowledge from past projects, training, and networks, I am fortunate to have throughout my journey.

The Bootcamp opportunity that Kodluyoruz provides is very valuable for us. It lets us know each other better and find a path for employment. Kodluyoruz’s efforts wouldn’t have been possible without the kind support of our partner, Western Union. We believe that our partnership can make us reach more youth communities. Opening the floor for integration to the young Syrians, Turks, and other nationalities to live and co-create a positive impact within Turkey’s talent ecosystem.

Maybe we speak different languages, but we all can speak and understand the language of code. Code lines are not only for writing and executing functions, but they are also a unifying expression that the whole globe can understand.

Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe, or you want to pursue a career in the 21st century, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn.

— Stephen Hawking

With this quote, I want to remind all of us who want to create a change and impact in our communities, to hold our focus on finding the talent and making it accessible for them to learn to code, and to have a future.

Thanks to Western Union for all their support!
